Karen is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker-Supervisor (LCSW-S) with a Master’s degree of Science in Social Work from Columbia University and a Bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin. She has gained her experience from a variety of environments—each of which have prepared her to be a compassionate and well-rounded therapist.
While living in Washington D.C, she worked on Capitol Hill with a focus on legislative health care. Although she loved the mission to create fair and sound public policies, her main interest was in making smaller changes with people one on one. Real change happens on a large and small scale, and Karen is very driven to help her clients reach their goals.
Through her fifteen years plus career as a therapist, she has developed a skill and style that is conducive to working with clients and families struggling to “get back to normal” or learn new says of thinking to overcome challenges in their life, big and small. She specializes in treating PTSD and other trauma-related disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, self-harming behaviors, addiction, mood disorders, family issues, parenting issues, couples issues and personality disorders. She applies numerous evidence-based therapies, including Eye Movement Desensitization (EMDR), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). These modalities can be adapted based on the client’s needs and age. She sees children, teens and adults for individual, couples or family counseling.
Karen believes counseling is a useful tool for anyone looking to make positive changes in their life, looking to get back to feeling good again or wanting a partner to help guide them through a difficult time. She believes reaching out for help is a sign of strength and that a person will reap rewards for that risk, whether it is with Karen or any other professional.
For fun, Karen likes to hike and bike with family. She is an animal lover, including horses, cats and dogs.
